Report “Science open to the world” 2020 released

The German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies DZHW and DAAD have just released the new edition of their report “Wissenschaft Weltoffen 2020”. Here are some key facts related to the international doctoral training in Germany (2019).


PhD candidates

Germany ranks 4 among the host countries, behind the USA, Great-Britain and France.

9% of all international students are enrolled for a doctoral training, which makes 25% of all PhD candidates in Germany. This number increased by 3% in comparison to 2018 but +10% within a decade.

Between 2013 and 2017, the number of international PhD candidates increased by 13% in Germany, whereas only +5% in Great Britain and -5% in France. The countries in which the number of PhD candidates increased the most are Spain (+236%), Turkey (+111%), Hungary (+98%) and Portugal (+83%).

  • Mathematics and life sciences (36%)

 18% of new PhD holders in Germany are international.

 

Visiting scholars

Visiting scholars in Germany are mostly funded by the 3 major organisations: DFG (46%), DAAD (40%), Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung (7%). The foreign funding agencies that are funding the most visiting scholars in Germany are JSPS, the European Commission (MSCA schemes) and SNF.
